I used to subscribe to Norton and Bitdefender, both of which cost me around 40-50 bucks a year. Now I use Avast + Zonealarm free firewall and they work perfectly fine for me. So my question is: what’s the advantage of paid av programs over free ones?

Hello,
Paid for programs like the Suites are highly recommended. They come with Password Safes to.
Well worth the money for proper protection.
Add a Router to the Suite and you are set very well.
Use about a 21 digit password these days.

As per PC World Magazine’s review on antivirus programs, paid versions in general have better detection and removal than free versions. In general, paid versions offer comprehensive internet security suites, which includes an antivirus, firewall, web safety tool and privacy controls. As you have already experienced, with free security software, you have to mix and match (i.e. Avast for antivirus protection and ZoneAlarm firewall). The idea of a complete suite with universal control is very appealing for people who like simplicity and ease of use. Everything working in concert is great. A suite guarantees that there shouldn’t be any incompatibilities between the different components. Paid versions also offer tech support which no free versions offer.
None, as far I can tell. I have used Avast for over five years with no problems. I used to use Zonealarm but now use the Windows firewall.
