i use both (on difference PCs) and i can sum it up like this:
AVG is better if you want a low hastle program that sits in the background. i’d recommend this if your computer knowledge isnt great.
Avast if you dont mind the occasional popup or you like having control over programs. for instance it has a sandbox mode (kinda like a ‘safe’ program opening mode), which avast suggests when you open some programs, although you can turn this off. avast has more features, but can also be more obtrusive sometimes.

I just love when people suggest something that you didn’t ask about – NOT.
Avast Free is the best all-around free antivirus.
Its detection rates are better than AVG, and most importantly, Avast can be scheduled to run a boot-time scan.
This can save your *** if you are fighting an active infection.

ya… that is correct. AVG has removed AVG 2011 anti-virus from their site. Mostly AVG 2012 will be available in few months. So, you can avail AVG 2012 trail version.
