Your Mac OS is built on a more secure foundation than other operating systems.
Although you will find anti virus products available for your Mac, at this stage, they aren’t really necessary.
Your Mac has a Firewall. You can turn it on or off in System Preferences. To find that, click on the black apple in the top left-hand corner of your screen, it’s usually the 4th option.
Once there, look for ‘Security and Privacy’ (top row), and click on it.
There are 4 tabs across the top of the security settings pane, choose Firewall. You will see how to turn it on.
My personal experience has proved that there is not much out there to harm your Mac (yet). In fact, I have had the Firewall turned OFF for 2 years and 4 months.
I don’t have any additional protection and have never had a problem.
It is one of the reasons that we pay more for Macs.
To study this further, there is a great book by David Pogue called “Mac OSX the missing manual.”
He explains in more detail how the Mac system is inherently safer than others.
Having said all of that, remember that someday, someone will create a virus that is specifically designed to corrupt your Mac. It just hasn’t happened YET.
Most Mac owners that I know, simply use the Firewall.
If you do go looking for protection ware for your Mac because you feel that you really want it, I cannot offer advice about which to choose, but I can suggest very strongly that you avoid a package called MacKeeper.
It has a bad reputation, many Mac specific forums that I have visited over the last 2 years have reported problems and difficulty getting rid of it.
Try not to fall into the trap of advertising that offers to speed up your Mac and keep it squeaky clean.
There are inbuilt applications to do precisely those things.
The longer you have your Mac, the more you will learn about all of the inbuilt systems designed by apple to keep your computer running safely and efficiently.
    Good Luck

Chris gave you a pretty good idea and answer. Of all the malware out there, 99.96% is written for the Windows platform. Less than 1/100 of 1% is written for Macs. There hasn’t been a true MacOS X virus in 5 years. There is a handful of Mac malware in the form of trojans which trick you into installing them with your admin password after you agree to download them. Most are caught by the trojan detector built into your Mac. They are usually in illegal downloads like torrents of Photoshop, or for the gullible “free software to view HD porn”, “you won an iTunes giftcard”, “you need to upgrade your version of FlashPlayer (use our link)”. I did tech support for a school district for 10 years, never had a Mac with any virus. If 3,000 students (always trying to use proxies) can’t infect their Macs, odds are you won’t.
