my boyfriend loves messing around with his computer he is really into computer security so he goes on sites that lists malicious urls and domains and pastes them in his browser as a way to test his security programs
while i like his eagerness i told him if something goes wrong and his pc gets messed up he is screwed
do a lot of computer noobies do things like that?
i don’t think it is dumb per se, like a guy tinkering with a car who wants to be a mechanic someday
i guess you learn by trial and error
i hear him in the other room going, ”haha avast has blocked all of em so far” so i say, ”what if it misses one?” he says, ”well then malwarebytes or comodo should get it”
it just seems VERY risky to me
I’m beginning to think he’d rather mess around with it than with me, lol

That only sounds like curiosity. lol. But if you don’t know much about computers the best way to learn about something is to try it yourself. On another note the best free software to use, i think, is Microsoft Security Essentials. It always lets you know when you download something that can harm your computer and it’ll clean it right away. And tell him the guy that answered your question says to give you some attention rather than his computer. Remember that computers don’t have feelings and people do. Your not gonna hurt the computers feelings if you stop playing with it for a while. lol.
Yeah, it is normal. I do stuff similar to that, but not as risky–I sometimes just mess with coding or hack my operating system. If he messes up, you warned him. I am sure he is smart enough to fix his computer if it messes up, considering that he is actually risking his computer. If he needs help fixing it though, you can contact me.
As long as your boyfriend is using that computer as test with a separate internet connection, he should be fine. If worst come to worst, he can always format and clean install Windows again. There is MBR (Master Boot Record) infection but can fix that by booting up with a bootable CD and then run “fixmbr” which will restore the MBR to a default setting – I do hope your boyfriend is aware that.
As a PC Tech, I am always copying the virus exe file that I find on my customer’s PCs and replicate it on my test machine back at the office.
So, to answer your question, yes a lot of techs will toy with these bugs to see how they behave and to better learn how to deal with them in the real world.
Good luck!
