I’m about to run out on my McAfee, and honestly I don’t get on the internet that much, so I figure any money spent to keep it going might be a waste of money. Is there an anti-virus and spyware out there that are free and are actually really good? I remember my old computer teacher telling me of a free one that had an icon of a green side and a red side and would actually show when someone or something was “looking” at my computer by the red side lighting up.

To be honest with you McAfee, AVG, Avast ect are all not that great for your computer. Anti-Virus is one thing that you “get what you pay for”. I am a computer repair tech supervisor. I did computer repairs for about 4 years until I became supervisor.
No anti virus can protect you 110%. Even the ones that you pay for. But as of late Webroot Secure anywhere is doing a great job. I honestly cant bring my self to recommend a Free Anti Virus to you because they just add to much instability to a computer.
I my self use Webroot Secure anywhere.
The one that I like, along with many other people, is MalwareBytes which is completely free. They update their virus definitions regularly. However unlike McAfee, it won’t automatically scan your computer unless you pay for the full version. Remember to always start your computer in safe mode if you think you have malware.

Happy virus hunting.
i’m not sure about the red/green icon, but i’ve used AVG FREE as my free AV product of choice for years now without an issue, and recommend it to all my clients. it gets a big exclamation mark (!) on its logo when there is a problem.
the only downside is that you must uninstall and install a new one almost once a year, as they update their interface, but it is a minor trade-off for “free” and effective.
Avast and Avira are two other fine AV programs.
