I read a review of MSE in December 2010 (I think) that said it has/had a 98% Detection Rate. Has it gotten better or worse? How does it compare with the other free antiviruses, and how does it compare with the paid antiviruses?

Yeah it is a good antivirus, it works good yes it is good compared to other antiviriuses.
Compared to other paid antiviruses ofcourse it is not that good but although amont the free antiviruses it is a good one. If you have RAM more that 1GB then I prefer you to use Avast! Free Antiviruses.
Depends on who you ask. I have always used Avast and always been pleased. No matter what Anti-Virus you use the bad guys will still get in. Unfortunately the bad guys far outnumber the good guys and malware evolves at such a rapid rate that none of the AV providers can protect 100% of the time.
I have read a lot of reviews, and although I personally have chosen not to use MSE, MSE rates high on the free AV rankings, its up there with AVG, Avast, Avira, etc… From all accounts its nice and lightweight and has a high success rate when blocking infections. That’s really the best you can ask for from your Anti-Virus provider.
Always remember that with AV software ANYTHING is better than nothing, and paying for AV programs is typically a waste of money because NO ONE can guarantee you won’t get infected. Free software has just about as much success as Paid FULL SOLUTION software like Norton. Norton will also run rather heavy on your system and consume a lot of memory that the light weight free guys don’t do.
avira free is better.
