One sore point in U.S.-Mexico relations, involves a dispute over whether to allow Mexican trucks onto U.S. highways. The U.S. ban has prompted Mexico to enact steep tariffs on U.S. potatoes and other products. Union truck drivers fought to block the Mexican trucks to save U.S. jobs. But now U.S. farmers say the resulting trade fight is costing them jobs and business.
Last year, Mexico imposed more than $2 billion worth of tariffs on potatoes, grapes and 90 other agricultural and manufactured goods produced in the U.S.
Mexico used to buy a lot of potatoes from region. In fact, most of the French fries at McDonald’s across Mexico and Asia come from Oregon and Washington. But the tariff has cut in half U.S. exports of frozen potato products to Mexico. Meanwhile, Canadian frozen potato shipments have risen by 50 percent. Iverson says that that means fewer potatoes are being planted here.
: And it turns out Mexico is also a big importer of Christmas trees from Oregon. But those, too, are targeted by the tariffs. So this past year, the growers around here were burning their unsold trees. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story…

You can’t really say, and even if the figures were available, it is likely that the administration would downplay it. There’s evidence that job growth figures were exaggerated, using book cooking methods such as including low paying jobs that were not previously included in employment figures.
We opened up foreign trade in the past by lowering tariffs on imported goods in the past. We did this because of the fact that when we’d raise tariffs, other nations would do the same. If Mexican businesses have to pay more to import our goods, they’ll likely look elsewhere, and I can’t blame them. I think it really is hurtful to the economy to limit the profits of our countries by enacting a policy which has been reciprocated with higher tariffs on our goods. The exact impact of the decision can’t be estimated, but it is likely that on some level, agricultural jobs will be hurt. Besides, allowing Mexican truckers on our roads means that they will likely spend money in our establishments, like diners, gas stations, and other businesses.
Mexico filed a NAFTA Chapter 20 claim against the US arguing the ban violates NAFTA’s most favored nation obligation (Article 1203) – in 2001. I don’t think Obama was President then.
… None. Ever since Reagan began his war on unions, US wages have stagnated. Germany, with its strong unions, has weathered this recession better than countries like the US with weaker unions.
LOL Teamsters are only .04% of the work force. Why are you concerned. Obama is helping the little guy.
it’s not just the teamsters. most americans support protectionist policies at this time
Zero.
thousands, in third world sweat shop countries. Thousands of jobs have been saved in the united states.
none, but many have been saved and created.
are you so stupid as to believe the President doesnt have access to cost-benefit analysis…?
The GOA just released it’s finding on the job market for 2009 ( Pres . Obama’s first year in office ) & guess what? Job creation was up 8% !!
If there were more Union jobs in America , then more American’s would be making a decent wage & actually have some befits ( as opposed to making minimal wage & having no benefits , like millions ). If companies didn’t run themselves solely based on greed perhaps things would be different but that’s not the case is it. If it was , maybe we could find something actually made in the USA & not freakin’ China!
Bush II never created anything but National Debt! Bush II screwed up soooo bad it’ll take at least a decade to fix all the half started-half *** projects he successfully pushed through a GOP congress.
Republicans are so delusionly about how they sold out hard working Americas & shipped hundred of thousands of jobs overseas!
Barry Goldwater would be ashamed of the GOP today!!!
