I have a HP G45 or sometime like that, I’m not near it. It’s a Windows Vista 32 bit or 64 bit, like I said, I’m not near it. Recently it’s been freezing like crazy. You can say that after you log in, you have 4 minutes before it freezes like a deer in a pair of high beams. It’s been occurring one too many times. I’m thinking wiping it clean and reinstall the operating system. Now here’s a little info about the laptop, it’s 5 years ago like it matters. So is it worth reinstalling the OS or give up on it completely?
F.Y.I.: Nothing was installed. Antivirus is Trend Micro and it’s a good system!

Ok. So you are asking if it is worth spending a few hours performing a factory recovery? Is your time REALLY that valuable, where you have to debate whether a few hours equates to the several hundred dollars it would take to replace the unit?
Let me ask you… since you are already considering replacing the unit… what exactly do you have to lose by performing a factory recovery… besides time? The thing isn’t going to explode.
I will say, that after 5 years, you should be preparing to replace the hard drive… because it will fail sometime in the near future. So, if you never made the recovery discs, then you SHOULD use the recovery partition and perform a factory recovery, and THEN make the recovery discs.
But I get the impression that this is just too much effort. So, maybe you should just buy a new one. I’ll take that old one off your hands then.
1. You can start by trying a disk defrag found in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
2. Preforming a reinstall could fix your problem if it isn’t a hardware issue that you have. It’s worth a try, remember to back up everything important first as you should always format the hard drive your operating system is installed on when doing this.
3. If you chose to purchase a new laptop, donate your old one. There are many charities that will fix old computer equipment and re-distribute it to people in need.
well if you have nothing on your laptop then i say go and re-install the OS! (if you have restore disks that is) just make sure you have backed up all of your documents before you do. try running malwarebytes anti-malware (free anti-malware/nasties remover) before running the backup to make sure you dont transfer any viruses over when you backup your documents.
although it might be wise to make sure you can re-install all of your software easily (remembering that some software will need to have a licence key, and some may need to be downloaded again)
Try these tips;
1) Upgrade to Windows 7, it’s the latest and greatest.
2) Uninstall all the programs that you don’t need, they waste memory.
3) Defragment your hard drive, that can resolve issues.
4) Delete all excess files on your hard drive.
5) Format your hard drive.
6) Check your internet bandwidth with your Internet Service Provider, you could be capped.
7) Get a better anti-virus, your current one might not detect malware on your computer
it’s always worth trying a few things first before giving up. Try wiping the hard drive and re-installing the operating system. If it doesn’t work i think it may be a good idea to get a professional opinion from an IT Technician before throwing it out the window.
