Yes it does work and currently it’s one of the best AV in the market. It has a high detection rate, make few false positives and has the fastest scan engine among all. It can compete with the paid AV products except that the free version won’t give you 24/7 customer support. However, you can still ask help from sites like Y!A if you see some problems in using the product.

I find it to be the best *all-around* free antivirus.

Be sure to register it when you install it, then you only have to re-register it once a year afterwards.
Regardless of how many times you re-register, it is always free.
Conversely, I wouldn’t allow AVG on any computer that I use.

Fine, If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

A lot of people like it. Personally I wouldn’t allow it on any of the 8 computers that I am responsible for keeping in good running condition. I tried it once, and I couldn’t get it out of my computer fast enough.

I use AVG (The free version) it is the best anti virus program out there and protects against the most. I haven’t used Avast but you could look for reviews online. I recommend AVG though.
