Um, well I’m really bad with computers. I got this one about 4 years ago, maybe 5. Its a Toshiba Windows Vista Home Basic laptop. I don’t know why but it is beyond slow. I have to use it mainly in safe mode because it is so slow. When the internet does work on it(not often) This box pops up. It has a pic of a dead guy in a scarf( or something like that) and it says random stuff. Sometimes it says PAGE HAS BECOME UNRESPONSIVE! KILL PAGE? and then you can either kill the page or wait. Is that normal? It just started doing that. I don’t have any antispyware stuff. I used to but it stopped working. It was called webroot. The only things I have done are defragment the hard drive, deleted all the unnessacary stuff, and updated everything I could. Still it is super duper slow! Is there anything else I could do to make it go faster? And I’m a novice with this type of stuff so please don’t make your answer too techy.

Looks like your computer is infected to a crawl.
Best thing to do is a clean install of the operating system.
Edited:
& Just for reference you can find what ram is compatible with your system through this site: http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ It’s pretty straight froward, you don’t need to skype anyone for that.
But your problem is that your computer is infected, more RAM will not help speed up an infected pc. The best thing to do is backup any videos, music, pictures, files you want saved and reinstall the operating system. You can do that using a vista install cd or the recovery disk/partition to restore factory settings if your laptop came with that option. You can find more information on how to restore your laptop to factory settings by looking for your laptop’s model name which is usually labeled on the front or somewhere at the back and searching “(model name) recovery”
Only once your laptop is clean should you worry about upgrading. But personally, I wouldn’t waste any money on upgrades. Because it sounds like the laptop would need a major overhaul in order to be considered fast by todays standards. That means new processor, more ram, bigger hard drive, and a decent integrated graphics to be compatible with windows 7 (and including an upgrade to windows 7). Since your laptop is running vista home basic it’s unlikely your laptop is even capable of running windows 7 home premium. I’d say it’s best to just save your money and buy a brand new laptop when you can.
Upgrade your ram, I can show you how via skype. Just make sure you get the correct type of ram. You are likely on 32-bit, but I could tell you what to do to find out and show you compatible ram, via skype.
If you think you have a virus, get MalwareBytes or Panda Cloud Antivirus. Both are free and work well.
Put XP or windows 7 on it, use something like DNAB (Derricks Nuke and boot) to totally wipe the Hard drive and do a fresh install, sounds like you do have a virus/spy/malware.
Vista was slow from the start, get rid of it
Sounds like you might be better off to just think about buying another computer. If you have the recovery disk you could restore it back to factory settings and start all over. But it still probably still wouldn’t be very fast.
install glary utilites and do the one click scan…after 4 or years of use on ur computer this should help a lot…
also download malwarebytes anti malware to check for junk
finally, download avast anti virus to protect you in the future
>> Scan your computer with an antivirus
>> Apply defragmentation on your system
>> Delete all temporary files
>> Run disc clean up
>> Run Reginout scan.
replace the hard drive. then reinstall the OS onto it, then add more RAM.
reinstall the os and it will be like it was brand new
Every Microsoft Windows operating system has a registry. Your system registry holds a wealth of information about your computer, which is why we constantly hear from users that after using their PC for a short length of time, it no longer works the way it used to. This is due in part to invalid entries that exist in your system registry, that might exist because of software you are no longer using or software that was not properly removed. By removing these invalid entries, you can significantly increase the performance of your PC. Registry Easy will scan and repair your registry. Believe me though if you want a quick step up in computer performance this is a must. The registry must be cleaned to make a computer run faster.

Well, what you really need to do is to take all your data off the hard drive. Then find an Windows OS dvd of the version you know will work on your computer with what ever engine it has. Put the OS disk in the computer, restart on the dvd, then use that to reformat your disk, and I do mean reformat, wipe that hard drive as clean as you can, the reinstall your OS, put back your programs from the original dvds that you want, then import your data you need. It should then run as fast as it can with the OS you chose and the engine it has.
Almost forgot this, get your ram up to max. I usually forget to say this, sorry, always buy my machines stuffed to the gunnels with ram.
That is what we use to do in the 80s and 90s. Now days most people don’t do it. It should be done in cases like yours. IMHO that is. Good luck.
