Number Of Computer Issues; Mse Won’t Update, Windows Live Messenger Won’t Login, Skype Saying No Connection?

By antivirus software Posted in: Microsoft Security Essentials

Hey guys, thanks in advance for the help. Right, so I’m trying to sort out my sister’s netbook (a terrible excuse of a computer if ever I saw one..) and there’s a few issues. First of all, Microsoft Security Essentials won’t update; it claims its searching, for about 10 seconds, then just cancels on itself. Windows Live Messenger won’t login and the troubleshooter is saying theres an issue with Key Ports. Skype claims we’re connected but upon trying to Add a Contact, it says there is no internet connection (yet Google Chrome seems to work fine). Any ideas? Is it a porting issue? I’ve tried CCleaner to correct any potential registry issues, and I’m unable to find anything visibly wrong with it.
Only relevent tech detail is the OS I guess, and it’s Windows XP, SP3.

    hmmm, not quite, like maybe
are you on ethernet or wireless
do you have an ip address
    what router
    any other computers ok
you have given no relevant tech detail about the network connection at all

Try to install Malwarebytes, it is one of the top free malware scanners out there. Or try installing any virus/malware scanner. If it won’t let the install file run or let the program scan, it’s a virus.
Definately has all the trademarks of a virus. Microsoft Security Essentials being blocked from updates is a major indicator.
Viruses also tend to block Windows Updates.

Hands down, my first thought is that its a firewall (even if your not using say Comodo, but rather the built in Windows Firewall (not as complete in pre-Vista versions I believe)
Go into Control Panel and see what it says when you click Windows Firewall .. .whatever one you may use, it is allowing chrome through but not alot of others from what you are saying … Ccleaner registry cleaner probably wouldn’t fix anything anyway (in terms of this network issue, I mean)
ANOTHER issue I just thought of is if these non-Chrome Programs are trying to use a Proxy server .. that could be a clear sign of your issue. Check your Proxy settings and uncheck any proxy servers the programs may be using and then try to connect again
