If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

I use MSE as a good/free antivirus program. But with windows 7 high security, by default it has Windows defender which is basically the same thing. So do I need MSE or will I be okay without it?

I can’t find any head-to-head comparisons, but Trend Micro is one of the top antivirus / security suites available today. Microsoft Security Essentials is better than nothing (and it’s better than AVG as suggested above), but if given a choice, go with Trend. AVG sucks. AVG is popular with n00bs and the computer illiterate.
