Before I get the hate answers “its cruel” or “its like chopping off your own first knucle” stop.
I get it, people have their opinon on the subject. And my opinon is I think its fine. I’m concerned about the healing process, which is why I’m opting to do the little bit more expensive process of laser removal, which is safer & less painful, but I am getting my cat declawed. He is 3 months old right now. What age is appropriate to get it done. I’ve called three vets and got three different answers: 5 months, 6-9 months, and 1 year. So which one do I go with? Isn’t it true the younger they are when they get declawed/nutuered, the quicker and better the heal? Thanks ![]()
And again, I get it, you have an opinon about this. But I really don’t wanna hear your opinon unless its gonna be helpful towards my question, such as better ages to do it at, better ways to do it at, and what I can do for my cat afterwards to make him comfortable for the healing process. So simple “don’t do it. Its animal cruelty” will not be appreciated. Also, to put everyones minds at ease, he’s an indoor cat & always will be one.

I would wait until he’s five months old, since that’s what your vets have said. I remember getting my cat declawed when he was four months old. I don’t think it would hurt him, but you might wait a few months, just to be on the safe side.
We only had our cat’s front claws taken out, that way he can’t ruin the furniture, but still have a way of defending or scratching himself.
Good luck!
Just had fun reading all the above comments…
but seriously…-.-
You know you’re going to get people saying don’t do it.
So…don’t do it.
What Age?
Right now, give your cat up for adoption to a family who won’t essentially rip out the ends of his little paws.
If you’re concerned about healing process, here’s the best solution to the healing process and what will be easier on your cat, just DON’T.
If you don’t want to hear others opinions unless it suits you, don’t come to the internet for answers.
The fact that you can’t get the same time frame from 3 different vets, should say something about the procedure.
Do it as young as possible. The older your cat, the harder it is in on them. My vet would do it now but you need to talk to your vet and see when he/she will do it.
It is a painful procedure to be certain. The laser is a better way to do it. I look at like this. Many cats that are dumped are dumped because they clawed the leather sofa to bits. Better to de-claw than to throw a cat out of its house.
It is good he is indoor cat. They cannot climb or defend themselves without claws.
I think the best age to declaw a cat is when its owner has reached emotional maturity and is able to see their cat as a living, breathing creature, i.e. in your case, not for a very long time.
Why, oh why would you bring a beautiful kitten into your house just so you can mutilate it and watch it suffer for the rest of its life? There is a special corner of hell reserved for animal abusers and their complicit vets.
When he’s 18 yrs old and dying is a good time to mutilate him. Neuter him but do not declaw him unless you want severe physical and mental problems in the kitten. He did NOTHING wrong to deserve you mutilating him. If you feel you must have a declawed cat, then rehome this kitten and go to your shelter and adopt one that already had it done.
Laser declawing is no better then the traditional way – its STILL pain and suffering no matter what any one says – did you ask your cat how he feels missing his claws? Can he tell you he’s in pain? There is NO excuse for declawing….NONE.
You should check with your local vet. Usually they ask that the cat is within the age of being able to be fixed. This way the drug they give your cat isn’t too strong for him or her.
Also…. declawing isn’t too painful for the cat. It is hard for your cat to walk after the first couple days but your cat will get used to it.
If you are planning on keepign your cat until he/she dies then it is okay to get your cat declawed. If there is any reason your cat might get away then don’t declaw. Your cat will need his/her claws in the wild.
I will answer this question in a civil manner as people like you really outrage me…………
Anyways, ‘the healing process’ is NEVER! I have rescued an abandoned declawed cat and she will be traumatized for life. She will never be like other cats because someone decided to mutilate her when all they really needed to do was trim the claws. When I look at her, I always ask myself how a ‘human’ did this horrible thing to her.
There is a reason why this is illegal in most ‘civilized’ countries…..
IMO, people who want to declaw cats should not be allowed to own one as it is animal cruelty……..http://www.pawsneedclaws.com/Declaw_Info…http://community-2.webtv.net/stopdeclaw/…
