Why Does Me Computer Keep Freezing Every So Often?

By antivirus software Posted in: Trend Micro

Every now and then, I’ll be doing whatever I’m doing on my computer such as a game or Facebook or schoolwork and then all of a sudden my computer will freeze. First it will be Firefox or whatever program I am on that doesn’t respond but the computer itself will not respond – the task-bar at the bottom of the screen doesn’t respond, then when i press ctrl alt delete, it doesn’t work and goes to a black screen and then something comes up that says that ctrl alt delete does not work at this time, or something to that extent..I don’t know what it is, I have looked up many things but I am not sure what it could be.
I got this computer as a graduation gift in June 2010, so it is not old at all.
Here are the specs of my computer:
Gateway FX
i7 Processor – 860 @ 2.80 GHz
8 GB RAM
64-bit operating system (Windows 7)
Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
1 TB Hard Drive
This is why I don’t believe it is the performance of the computer..but I can’t understand what it could be. Some sites say that it could be the registry but I have a program for that already and have used it – i have ParetoLogic PC Health Advisor – and it still happens.
Also I don’t think it is a virus as I have scanned my computer fully with my trend micro antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
Any ideas as to waht the problem could be? I don’t believe the computer came with a windows 7 disc so if it comes down to me having to reinstall the operating system, how would I go about doing that?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

After it goes to the black screen, does your screen recover after a couple of seconds? With a message saying the AMD/ATI display driver has stopped responding but has recovered?
If so it could be Windows Timeout Detection and Recovery, its new with Vista and 7, basically its their attempt to solve the number one cause of computer hangs and blue screens. Graphics Card Drivers. Windows “detects” when the card might be hung or not responding. Then it rebuilds the driver stack and refreshes your screen, which keeps you from having to restart.
The problem is alot of times, the card driver is not really hung, windows just thinks it is. Here is a good article that might help you. You can make registry changes, which helped me with this problem.
Hope this is what your experiencing.

Heating problem, Try opening the case and make sure that fans are not clogged with dust, if so remove the dust, it can also be the thermal paste between the heatsink and cpu try removing it and then remake it.

Well if it is a virus, you will want to make sure you plan yo buy some program after your redo your computer. Also make a partition in your HD and put everything you want to keep on this so you will not lose this in the process. As for the way to reboot windows you will need to go to the name brand of your computer and usually they put it on their site of how to get access ummm I forget the proper term for it, but I have had to do this before when I got a virus that screwed windows up. If that dosn’t work its hardware that is causing it not software.
