Its total size is 141 GB. All the files (including hidden ones) constitute 59 GB. This should show 82 GB of free space, but it only shows 63 GB. I have run Microsoft Security Essentials and Norton 360, and no virus or spyware is shown either. I did disk clean up and disk defragmentation. It rose to 72 GB, but again, by and by, it has reached 63 GB and still shrinking without any reason. I don’t even download anything on my C Drive. Now, disk clean up and defragmentation also doesn’t work. I have an ASUS N53J. Please help!!!

Use Ccleaner to free up more space.
Free to use at htpp://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
First, it is a bad idea to be running two anti-virus programs. They will interfere with each other and cause problems.
The way Windows works is that it creates extra files as it needs them. There are vast numbers of temporary files and log files.
Some big ones are pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys
In Explorer (the file icon) go to Tools and Folder Options then View.
Make sure “Show hidden files” is set and that “Hide system files” is not set.
Then if you go to your C: drive you will see these files.
Pagefile.sys is your VIrtual Memory.
Hiberfil.sys is used for Hibernation.
What version of windows are you using? It is probably creating restore points. You can go into it by right clicking on your c drive and going to properties. Go to disk clean up and under more options you will see system restore and shadow copies. You can clean that up and it should give more space. You can also adjust your restore setting by right clicking on my computer and going to properties.
if you have a text file and type in HELLO thats 6 bytes.
unfortunately the computer has to use WHOLE disk sectors to store the file
it size is Six bytes but it occupies several disk sectors.
the actual number of sectors is determined by the filing system and a few other
things.
lots and lots of Tiny files can be WASTING a significant amount of space
** note this has a much smaller effect if files are generally large
this MINIMUM ALLOCATION SIZE is getting bigger because disks are bigger
and AF drives will be worse still. VISTA nad windows have AF facilities.
tiny files include TEMPORARY INTERNET files, cookies etc.
these files are in HIDDEN FOLDERS and Disk Cleanup no longer
functions properly to get rid of them all.
also be aware that there are SEVERAL TEMP folders which increases with
each USER on a pc.
obviously LOG files can also take up space
registry RESTORE POINTS occur everyday
control panel
files and folders
view
show hidden files and folders
see where your TEMP folders are. Empty them
see where your internet stuff is and empty those
empty an APPLICATION DATA folders holding things like pre-recorded DVD images
for instance if you have a video editor it may be creating temp files in a
hidden APPLICATION DATA folder somewhere.
hope all this helps.
